In digital marketing, don’t be afraid to lead your tribe

So often, as content marketers and online digital strategists, we see the same thing in our clients. Fear.

Despite what they may say the reason is for not biting the proverbial bullet and taking the reins on their digital presence, more often than not, it’s the result of one little thing: fear of charging the unknown.

Clients are afraid of what they don’t know. They’re afraid to take the leap and plunge into the dark waters of digital marketing.

They’re afraid to start that blog, because what if nobody reads it?

They’re afraid to put together and execute their social media campaign, because what if nobody follows them?

They’re afraid to revamp and modernize their decade(s)-old website, because how can they sell that (read: justify) cost to their boss? 

If you’re afraid of trying to navigate those murky waters alone, I say this: you are NOT alone. You do, in fact, have a tribe. You just need to find them.

#tbt: Marketing lessons learned from 16 years of building a company

For this week’s throwback Thursday post, well be re-examining a 2013 Whiteboard Friday marketing talk from Moz’s founder, Rand TBTFishkin, where he discussed the top three marketing lessons he learned throughout his 16 years of building Moz.

Those top three takeaways included:

1. Marketing flywheels > growth hacks. Rand believes you’re better off investing your time and energy into marketing strategies that will keep momentum going (like a spinning wheel), than wasting time trying to find that next big trick. Growth hacks might work for a little while… until they don’t, leaving you (almost) where you were before. Point blank: it’s just not sustainable. On the other hand, an effective flywheel strategy builds momentum and energy along the way, becoming an engine that turns on its own. This should be the goal.

Not just for journalists anymore, the inverted-pyramid style of organizing and prioritizing information can be used in your content marketing efforts, too. Moz’s latest Whiteboard Friday demonstrates the what, why and how.
 
You might start seeing podcasts pop up in search engine results if Google has its way. They hope to start making audio content searchable by incorporating podcast metadata into search results. The audio content would appear alongside articles, videos and images, just like any other type of content.
